Our boy's recent interest is juicing machines. He makes the juice, cleans the equipment and dries it off , then reassembles the parts.

Something for after school

I recently finished knitting a shawl of stripes. I had admired this and decided to have a go. I started off with garter stitch stripes and made shoulder increases as for the Feather and Fan Triangle Shawl in Cheryl Oberle's book Folk Shawls. With the book in front of me I proceeded as written, apart from the border. Instead of feather and fan pattern I used the similar old shale pattern.

I've been visiting Ravelry - (still just lurking though!) resulting in some Noro yarn shopping.I like these Noro colours. My excuse - it's Christmas shopping.
I finished Lacy Baktus.

This triangular scarf in one skein of Noro Kureyon Sock yarn S188.

And this rectangular scarf . I cast on 36 stitches instead of 26 and used two skeins of Noro Silk Garden Lite S2030. I unravelled the second skein so I could knit the colours in the reverse order for the second half of the scarf.

Firstly some red knitting in Bendigo Woolen Mills Camille yarn.
Under the plastic container is a small shawl I began long ago and recently finished. It needs washing/blocking, along with numerous pieces of knitting, but I'm waiting for some drier weather. I thought I'd try a fir cone pattern in a triangle shawl using bulkier yarn. While this project was stalled I discovered it is a very unoriginal idea and so I finished it off following this pattern.

Last week I tried out a bed sock pattern and knit one sock. It seemed a bit big and requires a tie cord. I wondered if a proper sock might be more practical.

so I went back to a favourite 8 ply sock pattern and lengthened the leg and used 3mm needles to make a more dense fabric. The first sock is almost done.

Lastly a pair of socks in Noro Kureyon sock yarn Colour 150. I used a 4 ply ladies sock pattern found on Wondoflex website which seems almost the same as the pattern in my old Patonyle knitting pattern booklet.

Yoghurt Chicken

This is a recipe from Our Chef's family. It is an easy meal because it uses the ingredients that I keep in stock - powdered spices, lemon, onion, yoghurt in the frig and chicken in the freezer.

2 teaspoons mustard (Keens!)
2 teaspoons paprika/chilli (I often use some crushed chilli)
2 teaspoons coriander
1 teaspoon cummin
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 onion
4 garlic cloves
juice of one lemon (sometimes add some of the zest)
1 cup yoghurt

Put these ingredients in a big beaker and use a stick blender to mix.

Pour over chicken (I usually use a pack of thigh fillets, Our Chef prefers whole pieces) and cook in the oven.

At home I iron those shirts then get out the sewing machine. It's time to finish off some projects that have been lurking around for months. Today, three aprons.

Why did a rather mediocre seamstress decide to start three aprons at once? (and why does she have a fabric stash?)
Finished the three aprons then tackled the dishes.

I decided to tinker with my blog after the school children were safely home and had their snacks. I found I could not DO anything at my old blog so here I am.

Today I tried the swap recipe.I followed the "cake" recipe closely. I've never added vanilla essence and instant coffee to my date pudding before. However I cheated with the sauce and did my usual; 1 cup cream and one cup of brown sugar in a jug, microwaved for 2 minutes.

Pot Holder Swap

Today I received a nice parcel - some pot holders and matching tea towel for Down to Earth's Pot Holder Swap.The parcel also contained some beautiful cards, some books for the children, and a recipe for Sticky Toffee Pudding that I shall be trying this week . Thank you so much Eileen.
Here are the items I posted. I prefer to knit but decided I better challenge myself a little so I used some of Sarah's chilli fabric for one of the potholders.And since I like to knit I had to try this because I had seen it on this nice lady’s blog a while back. I used Bendigo cotton but it seemed a bit thin so I bought a skein of 4ply Panda brand cotton from the local Kmart and knit the two yarns together. I included a recipe for ANZAC biscuits because the 25 April (the swap deadline) is ANZAC Day and a recipe for chocolate cake that I often use because we all like it here.

Time is flying. It is a lovely drizzly day here and I am making soup. I've been knitting another little doll sweater. This one is in left over sock yarn and should be more roomy and easier to put on than one I just finished in baby wool.

Last week we received a wonderful parcel. Thank you so much Sharon. Our Girl has lots of fun with her gifts and Our Boy will be wearing his apron tonight when we do our cheese rolls.

I have been organising some of my things ready to fill up this excellent knitting case and I'm looking for the perfect place for the cross stitch.

On the weekend we took our bicycles to Port Melbourne. Very nice .

Recently I completed another row of the blanket . Earlier this year (when there was no camera) there were more beanies in various yarns

and this little scarf from Interweave Knits magazine (Holiday 2007) using some Bendigo Alpaca.
I made these socks using my op shop Zarina

and these in Cleckheaton Tapestry.

A very long time ago I made these socks (now on the way to Tasmania) in Lincraft Sock yarn using an old Paton's Patonyle pattern.

During the last holidays we discovered the children liked sausage rolls. My MIL said "sausage meat, mixed herbs, onion and bread, in ready made pastry. I had a go last night and the children still liked them!

Tuesday night I used up the roast dinner. We've indulged in some frivolous shopping. One thing I could not resist was this girly dress from the op shop. It just needed a little shortening of the elastic over the shoulders.

Very happy here that day light saving is over!
On Monday, I spent some time "weeding" and then we did some baking.

Pasta with tuna for dinner then cinnamon rolls and brownie. Lots of play this morning; "Let's draw a city and the textas can be people".

Cheesy bread rolls, pizza and cauliflower soup.

Lots of shopping- bike rack for the car, seeds and seed raising mix, potting mix and spring bulbs for the children, a (hopefully) better quality hand spray fitting for the hose and this little water barrel for our laundry grey water. Must have water if we are to grow things.

Pancakes. I do like our new fry pan. The children planted their bulbs; ixia went in the ground and each child had a pot to fill.

Finally, an excellent Sunday evening roast by Our Chef.

It is the last day of the school term and we have a little blue lady guest for the holidays. I have many unfinished projects.

Crocheted squares for the little bits of leftover yarn. A good sized blanket will need about 400 and lots of joining, so this is a long term project.

I abandoned my other crochet squares blanket and made them into cushion covers instead.

Happily there won't be much sewing up with this knitted blanket project.

As usual, I have a beanie and a shawl (one of four) on the go.

February has flown. The children have settled into school for the year. I’ve been to various parent helper training sessions at Our Girl's school where there is a new principal (very proper, a Good Thing).

Still no camera, but I have expectations.

I have been de cluttering and find I have a lot of unfinished craft projects. Last year I tried finish it in February. This year might be make it in March.

Speaking of finishing things, this was my day on the 14th of February. A Saturday. I kept notes and had good intentions but here I am two weeks late.
I was up at 8 am, had pot of tea and lurked at the PC. Not a very nice time, very sad. The children were soon up. Our Boy was keen to watch what I consider inappropriate 'video clips’ on You tube. He is exposed to popular music at school. The lyrics might be questionable but the images that accompany them are definitely not suitable. I re-directed him and we sent an email to auntie instead.
I made pancakes for breakfast, “nice ones, like Dad’s”. Our Hero recently made some using bought mix left over from his Tasmanian walking trip, very popular with the young ones, so I added sugar to my formula and the result was “not better than dad’s, but the same amount good”.
Once Our Hero was up we were off to the children’s swimming lessons. On the way home we visited a shopping centre where the ‘boys’ went food shopping and I took Our Girl to buy new swimmers. There was not a lot of choice. We ended up with a bikini top, much to the delight of Our Girl. However she has strict instructions that the top is only to be worn inside, at home. For out and about, where sun protection and modesty are issues, there is a T shirt style top that matches the pants.
Back home the adults were lacking energy. Our Hero retired with a book. I finished a square on this year's knitted blanket project and read some Agatha Christie. Our Girl had water melon and pancake for lunch and Our Boy had leftover pizza.
Our Girl enjoyed a school friend visiting in the afternoon. Noisy fun. Our Boy would describe a roller coaster ride in his loud voice with the girls screaming as required, or the three of them would practice rock concerts with Our Boy as the lead singer. Very loud.
I had another skirmish with my ant enemies, this time the cupboard under the sink was invaded.
Tea time, we abandoned our fish and chip plan since we had no energy for the deep frying business. Instead I fried some sausages, chopped some salad vegetables and put the Bird’s Eye Hash Browns in the oven (one of our versions of fast food – Mac Freezer).
And that was our 14th of February.

During my Tasmanian summer there was lots of knitting but few pictures. I remain camera-less!

I found a nice pattern on Ravelry and made numerous beanies , some in 8ply (DK) wool and some in Paton’s Jet. Good for Christmas gifts.

This was a great pattern too. I used red Totem . I also used the pattern (minus the seed stitch rib) for self striping wool socks (Cleckheaton Country Prints) and plan to make more.

It is the 14th of the month again.

Not an early start today. I had a late night (1 am !!!) watching this with mum.

A good opportunity to do some of this.

It has been a nice sunny day (I was very happy to miss out on a 39 degree Melbourne day) .

Our Boy went for a morning walk with nanna and Lucy the dog. Our girl pottered about in her PJs.

I spent an hour in the morning working out how to use mum's camera (mine had a sad encounter with a driveway).

We received a nice book for Christmas and there were lemons on mum's tree, so after lunch I had a go at lemon marmalade.

Jam making is new to me. The product in the jar looks rather 'wet' but the sample in the frig looks promising. I shall see.

During the marmalade experiment I baked biscuits (possibly unwise). I was asked to take a picture of this washing machine drawing, so here it is.

There were a few dishes to wash up and then I caught a bus to town to return some DVDs and library books and buy some post cards. The children stayed with nanna.

I decided to walk back from town.

I was home by 530pm and very ready for a nice cup of tea.

Mum made a salad and microwaved some potato which we had with left over chicken. We discovered the children did not like "easy Mac" - no great loss! They had some potato instead.

Better have an earlier night tonight.

Our Boy and I went to mass with Nanna and then we were off to Scottsdale for lunch.

My Sunday the 14th December

The 14th December started here with heavy rain. Our Boy was up and about early as usual. He said it was too wet for church and we stayed home. Our Girl and I enjoyed a late breakfast of tea and toast. I put away the dishes and did a quick tidy up around the house, then I made the fudge Our Girl requested for her class party this week at school while she had fun with her textas and colouring book.

We watched some DVDs and I did some of my green knitting, following the pattern this time.

After lunch we put up some Christmas decorations.

Our Boy went for a short bike ride with Our Hero (who later went for a walk in the hills). Our Girl watched more DVDs. It was a pyjama day for her.

In the afternoon, once the rain had stopped, I caught up with the washing and checked out the plant life.

The children had pasta for dinner. There was left over roast dinner for the adults. Our Boy asked for pizza so I used dough from the freezer and put a small pizza in the oven while the lunch box brownie was baking.

Now everyone has had their evening drink and snack, the dishes are washing, and the knitting is waiting.

Banana cake. I've rediscovered our cake tin with a hole in the middle. More mitts. These were a very quick knit. If I knit the pattern again I shall make the mitts longer and use a skein for each mitt. I tried the picot bind off but decided I preferred a plain edge.

I have been finishing some knitted items (sewing in ends and washing). A large trampoline is useful for drying large items flat.

It's hot and windy, thunder forecast. Itchy weather, but there's a lot to be said for a few early nights because I feel OK today.The sneaky washing is pegged out- to be folded and put away before the washing fiend gets home from school ( and before the hoped for rain).

Our Girl planted an acorn two years ago, not in the best spot unfortunately.

She's been busy as usual.

Not a lot happening here. We have had a boy home from school with the cold, I've been to the dentist (Mr.Rudd's bonus isn't going to last long!), and there's been some baking and knitting.

I tried a new way of knitting socks using short rows (Interweave Knits Citrine socklets pattern). The result using unglamourous 8ply wool looks scarily homemade. Warm though. Good slipper socks for a larger foot perhaps. I am trying again using the same yarn. Same technique, reduced stitch number and different pattern. These will be a snugger fit.

I had some frozen raspberries to use up this week.

During our excursion to Brighton last week Our Girl had an expensive cookie at a cafe. These tasted much better.

My Friday 14th November

It is the 14th today.
It was a wet, grey morning. Very pleasant after some nasty hot days.

I was up at 7.15 am. I prepared the school lunches and cut some fudge for Our Girl (her favourite sweet).

By 830 Our Boy was on his way to school listening to his new favourite.

Our Girl was delighted to be driven to school. Our Hero dropped us off on the way to work. Nice and early. Unusual for us.

By 915 am I was on a bus to the shops. I had a Medicare refund to collect after Our Girl's paediatric appointment. Happily all is well now.

Today I finally found "no tie" shoe laces for the children. I had a good look at the ladies fashions (not something I do often). I purchased a few items at a supermarket and a book and a skirt from the Salvos Op shop.

I decided to walk home. On the way I called to see my friend and check whether I was still meant to collect her grandson from school.

Here are my purchases.

Home at 2 pm there was plenty to do. The chores have been neglected this week. I have had a dreadful cold but today I feel much better.

After I straightened the children's bedding, there was laundry to fold. As usual there were dishes to do.

Our Boy arrived home and we walked around to collect Our Girl and friend. Our Girl and the visitor played with Lego. Meanwhile Our Boy set the washing machine going and I pegged out some hand washing.

I had a little look at the wilderness. The weeds are thriving. We have head high dandelion plants in what was a small vegie patch.

Last month this was flowering.

I have started checking the water meter (inspired by Rhonda Jean's recent post).

Today we received some junk mail from the government telling us what good things they are up to. The "Christmas bonus" will be useful for financing Our Boy's "strong preference" for overnight boat trips rather than faster, possibly more convenient, "el cheapo" air fares.

The rocket like cut-out is Our Boy's representation of a vacuum cleaner!

Our Girl recently watched a Harry Potter movie (her friends have seen them all!). She liked the ballroom scenes, hence the mice picture.

I pegged out half of Our Boy's load of washing ("you can do it mum, it's too hot" he told me).

Just after 6 pm our visitor's mum arrived to collect him.

I cooked fried chicken and rice for dinner.

After I tidied the kitchen, I sat down with my green knitting and we watched some "Monk" (hired DVD) .

Now it's bed time!

There was an evening meal for two ladies who really like canned beetroot.
We visited Myuna Farm. Twice!

We baked bread.

And I've been knitting.

My Tuesday 14th October

Yesterday was the 14th of the month.

I was up at 730am. I tidied the beds, prepared the school lunch boxes and helped the children get ready for school.

I checked the garden

and found some artist's mess to clean up.

While we waited for the bus there were new green leaves to admire.

Back inside it was time to "move" Our Girl. After a nice cup of tea she was up, dressed, eating breakfast and reading about a cat named Marcella.

We walked to school. Late again.

Back home by 930am there was laundry to sort and the kitchen to tidy.

There were other cleaning chores too. Due to a lack of "bounce" these were neglected in favour of this

accompanied by two episodes of Dr Who. I like the pattern but something is not quite right at the point so it will have to be undone.

Later there were shirts to iron.

In the afternoon I was off to buy fish for dinner and visit the library.

When Our Boy got home we walked around to collect Our Girl.

Back home Our Boy was keen to do some washing. He did a load and pegged it out with strict instructions about how it was to be left on the line for him to deal with the following day.

I cooked pasta for the children who don't eat salmon.

We had dinner and I tidied up and put the dishwasher on.

Later in the evening I did more knitting. I tried out that dish cloth pattern. I might crochet around the edge in red.

The children were in bed by 930pm and then I put a fringe on a scarf and watched some of Kenneth Clark's Civilisation before a shower and bed.

Another week!

Our Boy enjoyed some brownie mixture and The Chef was busy last weekend.

Dinosaurs are still "big", especially with some mud.

We have a seven year old.

There was an early, express birthday celebration (supermarket cake!) due to "work commitments" and another on the day.

Lots of new cute plastic things too. Here are just a few!

I did a lot of knitting while Our Girl was unwell and finished these.

Happily Our Girl is much better and having "made up" her lost five days of school holiday, will be back to school on Monday.

My Sunday the 14th September 2008

It is the 14th of the month. An early start; at 430 am Our Girl had some medicine and a little read.

Just after 7 am Our Boy was wanting breakfast, there were dishes to do and yesterday's neglected chores.

Our Girl spent the day on the sofa watching her favourite DVDs.
There has been a resurgence in Our Boy's interest in laundry.

He has decided I need to keep pegs in a container which he has labelled "pegs" like his friend (I prefer to leave them on the line).

He did a great job pegging out the first load, and wisely asked for help with the large sheet.

It was sometimes sunny, sometimes overcast and occasionally windy (great washing weather).

I did some knitting while watching Tin Tin.

The second load of washing went on the line and I checked out the flowers.

I baked some biscuits and a cake, got the washing in and was chastised for not using the new peg bin.We had our meal and I tidied up and now we will watch TV .
